In 1845 the Saxonian master clock maker Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his watch factory in

Glashütte just outside Dresden, Germany. The company had teething problems for a long time. However, by 1874 the factory had as many as 70 workers. The founder’s sons, Richard and Emil, joined their father’s company. This was when it became known around the world as A. Lange & Söhne. Along with large-scale productions of pocket watches the company also made wrist watches. Up until 1945 these were based on Swiss models that the company had acquired. The company’s very first own wrist watch (Kaliber 28) was created in 1945 under Russian occupation. In 1949 the government of what was then the German Democratic Republic combined all the watchmakers of Glashütte in one company,

VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). It was not until the refoundation of the company in 1990 that A. Lange & Söhne went back to its roots to continue old traditions. Today the company, which today is part of the Swiss Swatch Group, is seen as a successful example of the rebirth of the clock-making tradition from Glashütte. Fortunately, the Swatch Holding does not get involved in the day-to-day runnings of the business.
